If something happens

  1. 1. Emergency first. If life may be at risk, call the local emergency number before anything else.
  2. 2. Then your insurer. As soon as you can, and before any treatment that can wait — many policies only pay if you do.
  3. 3. Ask the hospital whether they bill your insurer directly, or need payment up front. Your insurer can often send a guarantee of payment.
  4. 4. Keep everything — the list below.

So your claim gets paid

  • Call your insurer's emergency line before any treatment that can wait — many policies require it.
  • Ask for an itemised invoice, not just a total.
  • Keep the medical report or discharge letter (diagnosis and treatment).
  • Keep every prescription and pharmacy receipt.
  • Photograph your passport page, insurance card and documents the hospital gives you.
  • If it was an accident, ask for a police or incident report.
  • Write down names, dates and what you were told while you still remember.
